Discovering Salida
We “discovered” Salida in December of 2004 as we were passing through to visit friends in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. We were instantly drawn to this quaint little town. While we live in the city, we both grew up in small towns and felt a connection to Salida. But, beyond simply being one of Colorado’s well preserved historic towns, Salida truly has a special character.
During the time we’ve spent here, we have met many wonderful and interesting people. We were initially struck by the radiance of this part of the Arkansas valley, and we have now come to truly treasure the natural beauty of the area and the genuine down-to-earth people in the community.
Another huge draw to the area was our passion for outdoor recreation. Jan loves to ski, but we were tired of the expense, traffic jams, and lift lines associated with Summit county skiing. Monarch is a hassle free purist ski paradise. Dan is an avid ultra marathon trail runner, completing among other races, the Leadville Trail 100 Run several years in a row. Salida’s unique weather and geography makes it a great location for year round training.
There are dozens of trails located within walking (or running) distance of the town. Trail heads for Mounts Princeton, Shavano, Antero, Tabequaquache are all within 30 minutes drive. Within an hour, you can be at ten more!
